openSUSE 11.4 and KDE 4.6.2 Screenshots

openSUSE 11.4 is released last month, and i have many things to write about it, but at the moment time did not allow me to do so, but i will share things step by step. Today i am going to share some screen shots from my desktop currently running KDE 4.6.2 as my main desktop.

Desktop screen shot with search and launch layout. One can change this from configure desktop while right clicking on the desktop screen. After changing to this layout, there are some settings which one can adjust to his/her taste.

Application utility feature while selecting any application/software on the desktop below the search box.

Search utility on the desktop, very useful one. One can configure what to show in the search in the settings(right click on the desktop screen and choose configure search and launch).

The new and improved KpackageKit in openSUSE 11.4, can show now most of the details for updates, installation. One thing i noticed, it did not show any progress while downloading/installing apps/updates. If one press the detail button, it will show just blank window pane(maybe it’s just me).

Dolphin as usual my preferred file manager. Love the filter and the new search utility w/o nepomuk services to index files.

And Firefox 4 stable from mozilla stable repo. Love the group tabs feature. openSUSE 11.4 by default have Firefox 4 beta 12, if you want to update to the stable release, you need mozilla stable repo. This post might be useful.

If you are on openSUSE, you can follow this post to install/upgrade.

Good luck and have fun!

Install KDE4.6 in openSUSE!

After having factory repos for KDE4.6, now we have stable repos for KDE4.6, so we can stay with the stable packages. The process of installing or upgrading is very simple, if you are using factory repos(disable/delete it), switching to stable is also easy. Nothing going to be lost in the process. It will just download and install the packages while changing to stable repos.

Lets start with the installation:

1- Add the following repos(choose your distro repos [11.2 or 11.3 or 11.4]). We will be doing this the easy way, i mean by YaST. Open YaST and click on software repositories, click on the Add button.

openSUSE 11.2 repos :

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/46/openSUSE_11.2/

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Extra/KDE_Release_46_openSUSE_11.2/

openSUSE 11.3 repos :

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/46/openSUSE_11.3/

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Extra/KDE_Release_46_openSUSE_11.3/

openSUSE 11.4 repos :

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/46/openSUSE_11.4/

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Extra/KDE_Release_46_openSUSE_11.4/

If you are done successfully with adding above repos, close the software repositories module.

2- At this point we will follow two ways to install/upgrade. Either by terminal OR by software management. Please choose either step 2a or 2b to upgrade, which suits you best.

2a- Open YaST and go to software management. Choose Repositories from the drop down menu if it is not there as a tab. Select the newly added repo. You will see ‘switch system packages‘ above the packages pane. Click on it and do this for the 2nd repo(extra repo). Done, click on the Accept button and there you go.

2b- Terminal way, run this command if you want to upgrade it through terminal(1st become root by su - ) :

zypper up

If you want to update the whole system with vendor change, run this command:

zypper dup

dup: distribution upgrade.

Please run one command at a time.

After installation, logout OR restart your machine.

Caution: Watch out for the dependency issues if any, hope will be not.

Have fun!

Update: There is a news in the forum, that openSUSE will have a repo for KDE 4.6.0, so keep reading and be in the 1st seat to have the news. I will update this post, if they announce the new repos.

—————————————————————————————

Update(01-02-2011): Ok, we got some news here, that there are stable repos available for 11.3 and 11.2. Just Gr8.

11.2 repo:

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/46/openSUSE_11.2/

11.3 repo:

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/46/openSUSE_11.3/

Just disable or delete the factory main repo and add one of the above repo. If you have some application from extra repo, just leave it enabled for the moment to avoid dependency issues.

Update(02-02-2011 6PM): And another gr8 news now is that there are Extra repos, so one no need to have factory extra repo. Just delete both factory and factory extra repo.

11.2 repo:

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Extra/KDE_Release_46_openSUSE_11.2/

11.3 repo:

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Extra/KDE_Release_46_openSUSE_11.3/
