KDE4.5 beta 2 short review and snapshosts -openSUSE 11.2-

Hi all,

I already wrote two articles about KDE4.5 and reviewed beta 1 a little here. After release of beta 2, i thought to give it a try and check how it goes this time. Good news is that, some bugs are fixed and some are still there. But no complain as this in beta phase and we users need to help the devs improve it by filing and submitting bug reports. I had filed some bug reports. Some of the things which are not yet stable are (this is in my point of view, not necessary it create problems for all):

1- In the login screen, session and menu does not work at all.

2- Dolphin got headache and have had crashes on different activities like opening video file, closing it.

3- Desktop wallpaper and widgets goes missing after reboot OR logout.

4- Network manager does not show networks name on right click on it.

5- And last one for me is, it’s little slow compare to KDE4.4. It is for me, maybe for others it will be fast.

Above are just simple bugs and hope it will be fixed before final release. But rather than that, it looks promising and attractive. Nice icons, nice look, improved desktop and applications.

Note: Above review is just for my system, not necessary others also have this. Maybe creating new .kde4 will work, but i haven’t tried it as no time to start from scratch.

I also took some screen shots and want to share it with you all.

Screen shots here!

If you want to install or upgrade to KDE4.5 beta 2 in openSUSE 11.2, this link will guide you through.

Have fun!

KDE4.5 Beta 2 in openSUSE 11.2

KDE Community ships 2nd beta release of the 4.5 taged as “cake”.

June 9th, 2010. Today, KDE has released the second beta version of what is to become KDE SC 4.5.0 in August 2010. KDE SC 4.5 Beta2 is targeted at testers and those that would like to have an early look at what’s coming to their desktops and netbooks this summer. KDE is now firmly in beta mode, meaning that the primary focus is on fixing bugs and preparing the stable release of the software compilation this summer. Over the last two weeks, roughly since the first beta, 1459 new bugs have been reported, and 1643 bugs have been closed, so we’re witnessing a lot of stabilization activity right now. More testing is in place, however, while the restless developers continue to create a rock-stable 4.5.0.

Announcement link.

If you are interested to upgrade to KDE 4.5 beta 2 in openSUSE 11.2, follow this link and have fun. The instructions and repos are the same for beta 1 and beta 2 to upgrade.

If you want to use stable KDE4.4.3/4 release, this link will guide you through.

Checkout openSUSE and KDE forums for more help and information.

KDE 4.4.4 Released: Upgrade in openSUSE 11.2

Hi all,

KDE Software Compilation 4.4.4 has been released, which  is codenamed as “cheers”. This compilation release focus on bug fixes rather than adding new improvements.

June 1st, 2010. Today, KDE has released a new version of the KDE Software Compilation (KDE SC). This month’s edition of KDE SC is a bugfix and translation update to KDE SC 4.4. KDE SC 4.4.4 is a recommended update for everyone running KDE SC 4.4.3 or earlier versions. As the release only contains bugfixes and translation updates, it will be a safe and pleasant update for everyone. Users around the world will appreciate that KDE SC 4.4.4 multi-language support is more complete. KDE SC 4 is already translated into more than 50 languages, with more to come.

Announcement page.

Change log page.

If you are on KDE4.4 series repos, the repos will have the latest packages.

Follow this article for how to upgrade.

Want to test bleeding edge KDE4.5, this article will guide you.

UPDATE-1 (04-06-2010 2pm): Repos are not populated yet for openSUSE 11.2, which means KDE4.4.4 is not available in the repos. I will update this post, when got packages in the repos.

UPDATE-2 (05-06-2010 3pm): Ran the update this afternoon, and got 51 packages to upgrade, but there is still no sign of KDE4.4.4 in the repos. So i assume we will have to wait till next Monday. Hope repos will be populated next week. Will update this post, if got packages in the mean time.

UPDATE-3 (08-06-2010 3pm): There is update from the openSUSE team, according to them they are busy with 11.3 ATM and still have no time to push KDE4.4.4 updates to the KDE4 repo. But as this does not change much things, because KDE4.4.4 has just few changes and has no effect on KDE4.4.3, so to stick to KDE4.4.3 is also fine ATM. But if you want to move to KDE4.5, follow the link above to update, KDE4.5 will release in August. At the mean time if you are on KDE4.3 and want to update to KDE4.4, this link will guide you to update.

UPDATE (19-06-2010 11am): Here we are with KDE4.4.4, openSUSE factory repo is populated with new KDE4.4.4 packages, run zypper dup or software management repositories switch, and you will be with KDE4.4.4 after a while. This link will guide you through if you still have problems with repos and command.
